An amazing new moth tour exploring the most interesting location in Chiang Mai province to see a great number of interesting & beautiful moth species!

We’re delighted to be heading to Thailand for a brand new moth tour in 2026! It is sure to be popular, read on to find out why…

November is the perfect time to escape the cold dull days and long nights of winter and visit northern Thailand. The summer rains will have ended, and days will be warm and sunny.

This promises to be an amazing moth tour, exploring four of the most interesting locations in the Chiang Mai province on northern Thailand. We will visit locations from lowland to reasonably high altitude, to help us find a great number of fascinating and beautiful species! We will of course spend some time on butterflies as well, but please be aware that they will be secondary to moths and if you want to focus a lot more on butterflies it is possible to do that by joining the tour which runs straight after this – or why not do both for a mega amount of moths & butterflies!?

But Thailand is also about much more than moths and butterflies – we should also see exotic lantern bugs, stick insects, giant katydids, beautiful damselflies, and much more.

This is a small group tour with a strict maximum of 3 guests. We believe that by keeping the group small you’ll get a higher quality tour, and will be able to study and photograph the moths and butterflies more easily. We don’t herd you together – you are encouraged to split up and explore the habitats at your own pace, thereby greatly increasing your chances of photographing with minimal disturbance. However at least one of the guides will always be within earshot, and we’ll be constantly on the lookout to show you any exciting species that you may have overlooked.

Our popular Greenwings guide is Adrian Hoskins, an expert on tropical butterflies who has visited Thailand and many other Asian countries numerous times, and will take time to assist with identifying your photographs in the evenings, and even by email after the tour. Throughout the tour our local guide will also be with us. He probably knows more about the butterflies of Thailand and than anyone else alive so you’ll be in good hands!

Important information

HOTELS: usually good 3/4 stars, but depending on the location and the need to be close to the moth lights, they could be simple accommodation with basic facilities. Please ask about this if you’re not sure what to expect.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: if needed, your passport must be valid for a period of 6 months beyond the expected exit date. It is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain any necessary tourist visa prior to departure.

HEALTH/FITNESS: It is your responsibility to ensure that you are medically and mentally fit to participate in a tropical tour where conditions will sometimes be basic and at times conditions might be harsh. Pleas ask us about this if you’re not sure what to expect.

TOURS HOURS:  It will usually be possible for guests to stay at the moth lights as much as they want. We anticipate timing for the guides to setup and operate the traps approximately 18.30 to 21.30 and 05.00 to 07.00. During the day we’ll have some activity, but, considering the long nights spent on the lights, we expect to go back to the hotel no later than 14:00 – 15:00 to have enough time to relax and rest. Usually, we will have an early dinner at 17.30, so we have enough time to start out moth activity at about 19.00.

EQUIPMENT: We’ll use various gear, such as 250w MV light, 200w UV light and others. Moth clothes and traps are provided too. Guests are also free to bring their own equipment but please discuss it with us first. We also would like to kindly inform you that is not allowed to collect specimens in the national parks and there are very severe penalties for offenders.

We aim to make booking and travelling with us as easy as possible, but we understand you may wish to ask us about certain elements of the tour or about your travel to get to the tour destination. To help we’ve enabled a direct email service to our tour leader, so please feel free to contact him by clicking the button below.
