We’re delighted to offer you the unique opportunity to spend a day with Jack in one of his favourite places, the River Wye in the Peak District National Park!

This is a chance to see a pristine upland river and a whole host of incredible wildlife that calls the peak district home.

We will meet along banks of the River Wye in Bakewell, the biggest town in the peak district. From Bakewell we’ll walk along the river looking for iconic upland river species such as the dipper, the county bird of Derbyshire. These birds thrive on the Wye with its huge array of riverfly life, which we’ll also have a closer look at.

There will be a rare opportunity to view life under the surface of the river too as Jack will bring his underwater camera kit. He should be able to show you several of the fish resident to the river, such as brown trout, grayling and one of the only populations of resident rainbow trout in the UK. He’ll be using a monitor to enable you to view the fish from the banks, without getting wet yourself!

Large numbers of waterfowl also gather in the centre of town, along with goosanders and scaup. Before moving on to the next location we’ll have lunch near to the river and grab a traditional and delicious Bakewell pudding too.

After pudding we’ll need to burn a few calories so we’ll head further upstream, where the river has a much more dramatic look to it with gorges and a river valley. Ravens fly overhead along with numerous birds of prey such as peregrine, buzzard and kestrel. The autumn is a fantastic time to walk through the woodland surrounding the river too, taking in the full glory of the season.

There are a few hotspots along the river where it is also possible to encounter water voles, which are fairly common along peak district rivers. These small mammals can be shy but can also be quite approachable so with luck we’ll get some good views.

Our day will end back in Bakewell, where we’ll probably be tempted to buy another of it’s famous puddings!
