An action packed wildlife safari, visiting a secret location in Kent – as featured on BBC One Show & Countryfile!
Richard Taylor-Jones is a wildlife television presenter, film maker, cameraman and photographer. He regularly appears on BBC Countryfile, The One Show, Coast and Springwatch. He uses his expertise to capture images of some of the best of British Wildlife.
He first came to recognition with his “Cinematic Landscape Films” which he authored and shot for BBC Springwatch. These pieces were far more artistic and individual than the shows usual content and were widely appreciated and enjoyed by the viewing public, so Richard was commissioned to make them over several series.
Richard has been working in this field for almost 20 years and has an in-depth knowledge of both natural history and all forms of camerawork. He has worked with conservationists, members of the public and some of the industry’s biggest names. His experience and deep appreciation of Britain’s wilder landscapes and British wildlife make him the perfect host for some of our ‘British Wildlife Breaks’.
Who doesn’t want to see Kingfisher’s, one of Britain’s most beautiful birds? On this packed day out the highlight will be visiting Richard’s secret Kingfisher location that’s featured on The One Show and Countryfile, where water voles and dragonflies are also in abundance. You will be amazed at just how much wildlife can be found in this hidden corner of Kent!
We’ll start the day with a visit to the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory (SBBO). On the journey in we will look and listen for calling cuckoos. Arriving at the SBBO we will watch their specialist bird ringers bring in the days catch, which could be anything from great tits to sparrowhawks. We will then have the privilege of releasing the birds back to the wild. It’ll then be a quick look at the moth trap before heading out onto the dunes to look for orchids and to watch and hear skylarks in full song.
A lovely pub lunch at the Chequers Pub will allow for a leisurely and delicious break and also the added bonus of potentially seeing a roosting little owl.
After lunch its off to Kingfisher mecca, a private set of lakes which Richard has been granted special access too. Here we will track down the birds at their favourite hunting spots and also get face to face with water voles, the UK’s fastest declining mammal. This unusual and unofficial nature reserve is also home to an enormous number of damsel and dragonflies (limited numbers will be on the wing for this April visit of course) as well as the endangered turtle dove. To round things off, without disturbing the birds at all, we will get to see Kingfishers taking their catch to their nest site – a perfect end to a packed day!
Please note: The group size is being kept to a maximum of just 6 guests so we recommend booking quickly to secure places on what we expect to be a very popular event!
Private tours on alternative dates are also available – please contact us for more details and price
